Musica Pacifica Baroque Ensemble will round out Coastal Concert season
From their “city by the bay” (San Francisco) to ours (Lewes), Musica Pacifica Baroque Ensemble performs Saturday, March 27 to conclude Coastal Concerts’ 2009-10 season. Coastal Concerts is a nonprofit organization promoting classical music appreciation in Southern Delaware. All concerts begin at 8pm at the Bethel United Methodist Church hall (a handicapped-accessible venue) on the corner of West Fourth and Market Streets in Lewes.
Each of the seven Musica Pacifica CD releases has won national and international awards. Their newest recording, “Dancing in the Isles—folk and Baroque music from Scotland, Ireland, and England,” is forthcoming.
Individual members of Musica Pacifica -- first-rank musicians playing period instruments -- are regular participants in early-music festivals and concert series across North America and abroad.
The evening’s program reflects the wide array of styles and influences in 17th and 18th century music. The Rondeau movement from Henry Purcell’s 1695 Suite from Abdelazer is a central theme in Benjamin Britten’s “Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra.”
Concert attendees are invited to enjoy a post-concert reception to chat with the Ensemble, and perhaps to discover which of its musicians is an avid Scrabble and pinball player. First-time concert-goers especially may be interested in getting a close-up look at the harpsichord (a modern copy of a 1775 instrument) and learning more about the group’s “period” instruments.
Tickets for each Coastal Concerts program are $20. Youth ages 10 to 18 are given free admission at the door for themselves and one accompanying adult. Tickets may be purchased online at www.coastalconcerts.org, by calling 888-212-6458, at the Lewes Chamber of Commerce, Lewes Gourmet and PUZZLES on Front Street in downtown Lewes, or at the door.
