COASTAL CONCERTS WINS GOVERNOR’S VOLUNTEER AWARD
Coastal Concerts of Lewes was recently recognized by Governor Jack Markell with an award for the volunteer work it does in the community. At a ceremony in Dover, the organization was selected as the best group in the "Arts and Leisure" category. At the 28th annual Governor’s Outstanding Volunteer event, Markell commended "those who volunteer their time in pursuit of building a better Delaware." Twenty six individuals and organizations were acknowledged. Dozens of volunteers make the classical concerts possible, from fund raising, publicity, scheduling and booking performing artists. In addition to the concerts, volunteers support an active outreach program. Through their efforts, music scholarships have been awarded for seven years, eight schools have benefited from in-school concerts, and five library programs introducing young children to music have been sponsored. "Toot Your Own Horn," a Coastal Concerts program, has distributed over fifty used instruments to local students.
